What is a proton exchange membrane？
Proton exchange membrane (PEM) is the core component of the proton exchange membrane fuel cell and plays a key role in battery performance. It not only has a blocking effect but also has the effect of conducting protons.
Types of proton exchange membranes: perfluorosulfonic acid proton exchange membranes; recast film; non-fluoropolymer proton exchange membranes; new composite proton exchange membranes, etc.
Function:
1.Proton conductivity: Proton exchange membranes can provide transport channels for protons (hydrogen ions), promoting the migration of protons from the anode to the cathode.
2.Reactant Separation: The membrane acts as a separator between the anode and cathode reactants in the fuel cell, preventing them from coming into direct contact.
3.Electron insulation: The proton exchange membrane does not conduct electrons, forcing electrons to conduct through external circuits, thereby achieving effective energy conversion.
4.Chemical stability: Membrane materials maintain a high degree of proton conductivity and chemical stability in specific chemical environments, ensuring efficient operation of fuel cells.
Applications:
1.Fuel cell: Proton exchange membrane fuel cells are power generation devices that convert the chemical energy of hydrogen and oxygen into electricity, heat and other reaction products through electrochemical reactions. The proton exchange membrane is the core material of this battery, responsible for isolating hydrogen and oxygen and transferring protons.
2.Electrolysis of water to produce hydrogen: The membrane electrode composed of a proton exchange membrane, a catalytic layer and a diffusion layer is the main place for material transport and electrochemical reactions in the water electrolyzer. This application greatly reduces the distance between the cathode and anode, improving the electrolysis efficiency and the purity of the hydrogen.
3.Chemical energy storage battery: An all-vanadium flow battery is a liquid redox renewable battery with metal vanadium ions as the active substance. Proton exchange membranes allow vanadium ions of different valence states to undergo redox reactions between positive and negative electrodes
