A grafting reaction is a type of chemical reaction in which the chemical bonds of one molecule (referred to as the “backbone” or “substrate”) are broken, and then the functional groups of another molecule (referred to as the “branch chain” or “grafting agent”) combine with these broken sites to form a new compound.
Based on the breaking and formation of chemical bonds, the modification and functionalization of the backbone molecule are achieved by introducing branch chain molecules with specific functional groups.

Through grafting reactions, the properties of polymer materials can be modified, such as enhancing the materials’ mechanical properties and thermal stability.
Grafting reactions also have wide applications in the preparation of biomedical materials, for instance, in the production of biodegradable polymer materials and drug carriers.
Additionally, grafting reactions are applied in fields like coatings, inks, and adhesives, which can improve the performance and stability of products.

Several Common Grafted Materials
1、Polypropylene (PP) Grafting
Through a twin-screw extruder, polar functional groups are introduced onto PP molecular chains to improve its wettability, printability, and adhesiveness.
2、Polyethylene (PE) Grafting
Using the strong shear force of twin screws, functional groups such as maleic anhydride are grafted onto PE molecular chains, enhancing its compatibility and interfacial adhesion. It is applied in industries like medical packaging.
3、Polyolefin Elastomer (POE) Grafting
Via twin-screw reactive extrusion, maleic anhydride, silanes, and other substances are introduced onto POE for grafting reactions. The resulting grafts are widely used in industries such as engineering plastic toughening, plastic alloy compatibilization, and photovoltaics. POE silane grafts can act as toughening agents and compatibilizers to improve the compatibility and adhesion between different materials (glass, EVA, backsheets) in photovoltaic modules. Additionally, POE silane grafts can be used as encapsulation materials for photovoltaic modules to enhance the performance of the encapsulation materials, improve their weather resistance and anti-aging properties, thereby extending the service life of photovoltaic modules.
